Fraud Digest

Completed in the summer of 2005 for the Szymoniak Firm, P.A., a West Palm Beach-based law firm, Fraud Digest was designed to streamline the process of entering data related to arrests, convictions, and sentences in cases involving fraud allegations.

A custom-built content management system (CMS), scripted primarily in PHP and utilizing a MySQL backend and SMARTY template manager, was built and tested over a several month-long period, during which we perfected many of the features requested by the client. The project has managed to stand the test of time and, according to our client, has managed to become a handy resource for law enforcement officials, government offices, and even the FBI. As of January 2010, there have been approximately 15,500 entries since August 2005.

Of course, after five years of little to no changes, the user interface is certainly showing its age. Designed back in the ancient days of table-based layouts—and certainly before blogging, CSS, AJAX, and many of the other things we’ve come to think of as synonymous with the Internet, had become mainstream—the front-end is in serious need of an overhaul. Aside from a total “inter-facelift,” the addition of RSS and browsing to the news pages, an AJAX-based search system, as well as a makeover to the content management system, would rank high on my list of things to change in the future.
